St Austell Brewery

B rewing fine ales has always been at the heart of our business. Today, we're busier than ever, providing the nation with our award-winning beers.

St Austell Brewery was founded in 1851 by Cornishman, Walter Hicks – a wine merchant and maltster. He began brewing at the Seven Stars Inn in St Austell – his first pub.

In 1867, he purchased the freehold of the London Inn, where he established a modern steam brewery. The building - Tregonissey House – still stands in St Austell town centre today. In 1893, he went on to build a new Victorian Tower Brewery on Trevarthian Road, proudly overlooking St Austell Bay.

Where are we today?

Over 170 years on, we are still brewing award-winning cask and bottled ales in the very same brewery. While traditional brewing techniques remain, innovation, passion and craftsmanship continue to evolve. Most famous for our flagship beer, Tribute pale ale, our range of award-winning beers - also including Proper Job IPA and korev lager - are available in pubs and supermarkets nationwide. In 2016, we acquired a second West Country brewery – Bath Ales. We’re also the leading wholesale distributor of beers, ciders, minerals, wines, and spirits in the West Country region.

Our skilled brewing team – led by Brewing Director, Georgina Young – brings together the very best Cornish ingredients wherever possible. Partnerships with local barley growers, and relationships with specialist hop growers across the world, means we can continue to brew new flavours and beer styles that delight.

Over 170 years on, we're still brewing our award-winning range.

Alongside our core cask and bottled range, the team also continues to spearhead innovation in the UK’s brewing scene.

The Small Batch Brewery (which launched in 2016) is designed to allow the highly skilled brewing team to keep experimenting with new flavours and globally inspired beer styles, using a truly ‘hands-on’ system. A series of exciting Small Batch Brews are rolled out to select pubs across the South West throughout the year, as well as limited-edition seasonal specials.

The Seven Stars Inn may have been Walter’s first pub purchase, but fast forward to the present day, we own over 180 pubs, inns and hotels, including managed houses and tenanted sites. Our thriving estate spans the West Country region ranging from Bristol in the east to the Isles of Scilly in the west. Many of the South West’s most famous pubs are part of the St Austell Brewery family and you will usually find one of our pubs at the heart of every community, particularly in Cornwall.

To this day, St Austell Brewery is still independent and family-owned.
