A common misconception about apprenticeships is that they are aimed at young people, when in fact they represent fantastic full-time career pathways for people of all ages – and pay a proper salary, with added benefits too. Here’s a little look at what you can expect from our chef apprenticeship course.
Training & progression
We work with an unrivalled network of education providers across the South West. Our apprenticeships link with colleges and businesses throughout the region, and we are committed to investing in our people, offering training and support at every stage of your career.
Once you become part of the family, there’s no end to the career possibilities. It’s common for people in our pub teams to switch departments, for example, they might take on a role at our head office. You’ll regularly find cross-functional growth opportunities across the company.
It doesn’t matter how much experience you have - you might have none at all - but you can be rest assured you’ll gain plenty on the course. Throughout the 12-month programme, you’ll work with experienced chefs in a fast-paced and fun environment, forming part of a close-knit, high-energy team. You’ll also learn and refine a wide range of cooking skills at off-site practical workshops organised by our training providers.
You’ll get to perfect your new skills when you get back to the kitchen. These practical lessons, coupled with the experience you’ll gain as part of a busy commercial kitchen team, will enable you to become a qualified chef.

Whether you find yourself working in a pub nestled along a dreamy harbourfront, or a historic inn surrounded by swathes of lush green countryside, we’re sure the surroundings will help inspire your creative flair in the kitchen.
You’ll be cooking with fresh ingredients, sourced from a trusted network of local businesses, many of which are family-owned. The produce is a dream to work with and tastes even better on the plate.
We won the BII NITA (National Innovation in Training Award) for ‘Best Apprenticeship Programme’ in 2017 and have been shortlisted for the award since. Many of our apprentices have gone on to receive praise and recognition following their graduation. In recent years, Chef Apprentice Brandon Penwarden won ‘Achiever of the Year’ at the 2019 Cornwall Apprenticeship Awards.
